Of Mice and Men 4/28/15

Of Mice and Men
Author: John Steinbeck
Pages: 1-76

In this book conflicts play a big role in the story. The conflicts helps build the story and make the story more engrossing and riveting. In the story, "Of Mice and Men" there is different kinds of conflict such as: Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs. Society. The combination of all of these types of conflicts make the story more intriguing. At the end, the conflict in "Of Mice and Men" plays a major role.

One of the conflicts that plays a major role in "Of Mice and Men" is a Man vs. Man conflict which is when Lennie wanted to feel the girl's (in Weed) dress because it was soft. I know that Lennie wanted to feel the girl's (in Weed) dress because on page 11 it says, "'Jus' wanted to feel that girl's dress like it was a mouse. This quote shows how Lennie just wanted to feel the girl's (in Weed) dress and also shows how Lennie likes mice. So the way that this has impacted the plot so far is that this conflict made George and Lennie go to the ranch and the bunkhouse, which is where mainly everything has been happening so far in the story. I know this because on page 11 George says, "...we got to sneak out in the dark and get outta the country." At the end, this conflict really impacted the plot dramatically.

Another one of the conflicts that plays a major role in "Of Mice and Men" is a Man vs. Man conflict which is when Curley and Lennie fought. I know that Curley and Lennie fought because on page 63 it says, "Curley's fist was swinging when Lennie reached forit. The next minute Curley was flopping like a fish on a line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie's big hand." This quote shows how Lennie and Curley fought and it also shows a metaphor. So the way that this imapcted the plot line is that without this fight they would not have potential problems with Curley and the boss. Overall, this conflict really impacted the plot dramatically.

Of Mice and Men 4/22/15

Of Mice and Men
Author: John Steinbeck
Pages: 1-37

In the ranch and bunk house there was a lot of both, positivity and negativity. Some positivity I saw in the ranch and bunk house was how Slim's dog had some puppies. Another positive thing that I saw was that George was okay with asking to get one for Lennie. I know that Slim's dog had some puppies because in the text it Slim says, "'She slang her pups last night,' said Slim." I know that George was okay with asking to a puppy for Lennie from Slim because in the text it says, "Lennie was watching George excitedly. George rumpled his arms into a messy pile. 'Yeah!' George said, 'I heard him, Lennie. I'll ask him.'" All in all, these are some pretty positive things that a new character from the ranch and bunk house brought.

All of the negativity I saw in the ranch and bunk house all had to do with the new character, Curley. The reason that I say this is because he demands things. I know this because in the text it Curley says, "'You seen a girl around here?' he demanded angrily." Curley is very cocky because he just got married. I know this because in the text the swamper says, "'He got married a couple of weeks ago. Wife lives over in the boss's house. Seems like Curley is cockier'n ever since he got married." Overall, Curley is the main reason that there is negativity around the ranch and bunk house.

Curley's wife doesn't have a name. The message I think John Steinbeck is trying to show us is that back then woman were treated badly. I know this because in the text Curley says, "'You seen a girl around here?' he demanded angrily." This quote shows how Curley think of his wife as just a girl, and nothing more than a girl. This quote also shows how he demanded instead of asking kindly, which shows how Curley thinks his wife is his property. At the end, the message I think John Steinbeck is trying to show us back then woman were treated badly.

Schooled 4/15/15

Schooled
Author: Gordon Korman
Pages: 1-78
Prompts: 1) Objective Summary 2) Describe the similarities and differences between the main character and you.

My book so far is about a hippy who needs to learn how to be more professional in order to survive public school. The hippy's name is Capricorn but in the book they call him "Cap" for short. Capricorn is struggling in school because he doesn't even know what a telephone is and all he knows is what him grandma taught him because he was homeschooled. The only reason he is in public school is because his grandma fell out of a plum tree. Now all he wants is to leave public school and he also wants his grandma to heal quickly. Overall "Cap's" life is not going so well for him.

Capricorn and I have some differences. One of the differences Capricorn and I have is that Capricorn knows how to drive and I don't. I know that Capricorn drives because in the text it says, "...I drive all the time..." Another difference Capricorn and I have is that he has only used a telephone a couple of times and I use it everyday. I know that Capricorn only used a telephone a couple of times because in the text it says, "I regarded hime blankly. 'What's nine-one-one?' 'The emergency number! On the telephone!' I told him the truth. 'I've talked on a telephone a couple times. In town. But we don't have one.'" Overall Capricorn and I are pretty different.

Capricorn and I have some differences but we also have one similarity as well. One similarity is that we both have a grandmother that has been with us for a very long time. I know that Capricorn has had his grandma, Rain with him for a very long time because in the text it says, "'So you drove here. At thirteen.' ' I drive all the time,' I informed him. 'Rain taught me when I was eight.'" This quote shows how Capricorn has known his grandmother, Rain for more than four years. At the end, Capricorn and I have more differences than similarities.
